Soleta Homes
About Soleta

Built from conviction. Not from a catalogue.

Soleta was founded in 2011 by Cătălin Butmălai. Since then, over 86 homes have been delivered across Romania and Western Europe — each one built with the same timber system, in the same factory, by the same team.

Soleta — designed and built from conviction

Soleta is a timber home manufacturer based in Sweden, with its factory in Romania. We design, engineer, manufacture, and assemble homes for clients across Europe and beyond — from the initial brief through to keys in hand. We do not subcontract technological design to one company and fabrication to another. The same team handles both, which is why quality remains consistent and accountability undivided.

The structural system of Soleta homes is post-and-beam, manufactured in our workshops to CNC tolerances. The materials are predominantly natural — timber, wood fibre, natural finishes. The energy strategy starts with the envelope, not with technology added afterwards. These are not features layered onto a standard building. They are the starting points of every home we design.

The Soleta Story

From timber craft to architectural system

Cătălin Butmălai has more than thirty-five years of experience in timber construction and furniture, and in 2011 he founded Soleta — not as a designer observing from the outside, but as someone who had built with the material itself. That accumulated knowledge shaped every decision that followed: the post-and-beam structural system, the workshop-based fabrication approach, and the insistence on natural materials specified to performance standards rather than trends. Soleta was not conceived as a product company. It was built around a technical conviction about how a premium timber home should be made.

The ZeroEnergy prototype and the international response

In 2011, while working within the Justin Capră Foundation for Inventics and Sustainable Technologies, Cătălin Butmălai began developing Soleta ZeroEnergy One — a home prototype designed to produce at least as much energy as it consumed. The prototype launched in Bucharest in 2013. In the period immediately after, it was featured by The Guardian, Inhabitat, Daily News, HomeAdore, Discovery, and many other outlets, reaching architecture and design audiences across five continents. That coverage was not a marketing outcome. It was the press responding to a genuinely new proposition at a time when very few timber home manufacturers were operating at that technical level.

Scale, continuity and what has not changed

Soleta focuses on quality and craft. It is not a volume-driven industrial company. Since 2013, it has delivered over 86 homes across Sweden, Romania, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Croatia. The home collection has evolved through four generations — each one more refined than the last. What has not changed is the design philosophy, the structural system, and the commitment to a single integrated delivery model. We do not promise more than we can execute to our standard.

What Soleta stands for

System-led architecture

Every Soleta home is built on the same post-and-beam structural logic — manufactured in the workshop, CNC-precise, assembled on site in sequence. The system is not a constraint on design. It is the condition that makes quality and beauty consistent and repeatable across projects and countries.

Honest materials

We specify materials for what they are, not for what they imitate. Natural timber, insulation made from natural fibres, ecological finishes. No cladding that pretends to be stone. No synthetic insulation chosen purely for cost. The home performs well because the materials perform honestly.

Long-term responsibility

A Soleta home is engineered with an 80-year structural design-life target, subject to specification, site conditions and proper maintenance. Our aftercare programme continues the relationship after handover. We take a direct interest in whether the home performs as designed — not because it is required, but because a building's long-term performance is the proof of its original quality.

What makes Soleta different

Soleta ZeroEnergy One launched in 2013 and, within just a few weeks, was featured by The Guardian and Grand Designs / Discovery (UK), Inhabitat (US), Daily News (US), HomeAdore (international), Mr Mondialisation (France), and many others around the world. That international recognition was followed immediately by the first client deliveries — Soleta was already a complete, mature product.

  • Featured in The Guardian, Inhabitat, Daily News, HomeAdore, and dozens of international architecture publications since 2013

  • Homes delivered in Sweden, Romania, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Croatia since 2013

  • Production facility in continuous operation since 1998

  • Four generations of collection models developed and refined since the ZeroEnergy One prototype

Cătălin Butmălai — Founder & Design Director, Soleta
The founder

Cătălin Butmălai is the founder and design director of Soleta. He came to architecture through construction, not the other way around. That sequence — building first, designing from accumulated material knowledge second — defines the way Soleta approaches every project. He is a disciple of Justin Capră, one of Romania's most original engineering minds, from whom he learned that originality is not a function of geography.

"I drew the first Soleta in 2011. Everything since then has been an attempt to make the next one better."

— Cătălin Butmălai, Founder
